We all know that the Piña Colada was invented in Puerto Rico - But why was a pineapple drink invented here in Puerto Rico? According to anthropological studies, it is known that the pineapple was brought from South America to Puerto Rico with the Tainos or their antecedents. Up until the 1940s, much more pineapple was grown in Puerto Rico, and it is believed that the same indigenous techniques were used for its cultivation.
Pineapple was grown mainly in the north by the town of Manatí and in the south by the town of Lajas. Although some pineapple farms are seen in those areas today, their reach was broader before - even, according to a National Geographic article from 1924, many grocery stores sold "Piña Fria", which was fresh pineapple juice with ice. The article also reports that pineapples from Puero Rico were exported to the United States, where they were the most coveted pineapples.
It is important to talk about pineapples in Puerto Rico, because it is an industry that has been on the island for hundreds of years - and more importantly, it is not an industry that is completely lost, that is, because of the demand for this beautiful fruit, Puerto Rico could become once again one of the largest pineapple producers.
